Rate of Descent (ROD) calculation on glide slope using glide slope angle in degrees and Ground Speed (GS) as rule of thumb

Beschreibung

As quick and easy solution for Rate of Descent (ROD) problems you can use the "1:60 rule". You will get the results in ft/min. It is e.g. applicable while you are approaching an airport and you need to calculate the required ROD for specific glide slope angles given in degree. The expected Ground Speed (GS) - relative to the ground need to be entered in knots (kt). The result will give required ROD

 

ROD (Rate of Descent) = Glide Slope Angle [°] * 100/60 * GS

 

Example:

Glide Slope Angle: 3°

Ground speed: 120 kt

 

Required ROD = 3° * 100/60 * 120 kt = 600ft/min
